With immense joy and gratitude to the almighty, I present a brief description about Nityanand hospital, Sarnath, Varanasi.
Fifty years ago, a vision took in the heart of mother Renhilde SRA a vision of service, healing and unwavering faith. In 1973 with the blessing of bishop Patrick D’Souza, she along with the IMS-BHU doctors, set out to bring promotion and health care to the rural communities of Mawaiya, Sarnath. It was not an easy path- fear, superstition and unfamiliarity created barriers but the sisters refused to waver and focused on Balvadi and healthcare. Their quiet perseverance, their tireless visit to the villages and their genuine care slowly earned the trust of the people, laying the foundation for what would become the rural Health Service.
What began in a simple mango grove with a cowshed soon transformed into a sanctuary of healing a beacon of hope with Sr. Joanita, Sr. Fides and Sr. Reinhilde SRA the mission expanded though resources were scare. Water was a Luxury; electricity was non-existent and yet they pressed on. The sisters walked miles to reach those in need bringing with them not medicine but hope. Faith was their strength service their calling.
A turning point came with the arrival of Dr. M.M. Lal, in 1974 a young and dynamic doctor who selflessly dedicated his service to the health unit 2020. He was a well-disciplined person with punctuality and by 1986, a new chapter began under Sr. Lauretta, whose passion for women’s health care changed countless lives. Her years of dedicated service ended too soon when illness took her in 1994 but her legacy lived on in the hands of Dr. Bennet in 1993. A graduate from the university of Vienna, she stepped into a challenge adopting to the culture, learning the language and earing the trust of the people. Her warm approach, dedication made every patient to feel seen and heard with a special focus on maternal and paediatric care.
From a humble beginning to a beacon of healing, Nityanand Hospital remains a symbol of faith, resilience and love. As we celebrate 50 years, we honour the pioneers who built it and those who carry their mission forward. This is more than a hospital, it is a legacy of service and hope a place of serenity, spiritual depth and inner healing.
